McCarey, Leo Directors Directing Filmmaking
Born Thomas Leo McCarey in 1898 in Los Angeles, California. Multi-talented filmmaker, best known as one of the most inspired comedy directors who ever worked in Hollywood. McCarey started his film career in the early 1920's. He was the director/writer with Laurel and Hardy, W.C. Fields, and the Marx Brothers. Later combined light drama and comedy to create such film classics as "The Bells of St. Mary's" and "Going My Way," and well as the romantic comedy and tear jerker, "An Affair to Remember." Won the Academy Award for Best Director in 1937 and 1944.
