Ritchie Valens, whose real name was Richard Valenzuela, was an early rock and roll star who died in a plane crash on February 3, 1959, near Mason City, Iowa that also took the lives of Buddy Holly and the Big Bopper. The movie "La Bamba" was based on his life.
