Famagusta District Cyprus Middle East
Category for sites corresponding to the ancient district of Famagusta which includes the major port of the same name on the eastern coast, and the north eastern Karpass Peninsula. The majority of the district has been administered by the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus since 1974. where it is divided into two Districts, Iskele and Gazimagusa (or Magusa). Localities in the north are shown here. Up until the talks of September 2008, these districts were not recognised internationally, and sovereignty remained as part of the Republic of Cyprus. In practice, Republic of Cyprus administered only southern parts of the ancient district of Famagusta, Ammochostos District consisting of the municipalities of Agia Napa, Deryneia, Paralimni and Protaras. This category also includes sites for the UK-administered area of Dhekelia in the east of the Island, and the United Nations Buffer Zone, Green Line between the disputed districts, east of Xylofagou, in the Cyprus: Larnaca District.
