Nanortalik Localities Greenland North America
Nanortalik (Greenlandic for The Bear Place) is Greenland’s southernmost municipal area and features a total area of 15,000 square kilometers and around 2,700 inhabitants in the district which includes the town, five villages, and several sheep farms. The town was founded as a trading post in 1797 at Sissarissoq. In 1830 the settlement was moved to its present location. The main occupations are hunting and fishing. Visitors to the town also have many activities that they can enjoy. As with many locations in Greenland, Nanortalik is not lacking in natural wildlife. Visitors might even catch site of an occasional Polar Bear. Besides the wildlife, visitors can enjoy mountain climbing, hiking, visiting the various historical sites in the town including a colonial church built in 1916, or taking a glacier boat trip.
