As part of the worldwide celebrations to commemorate 400 years of the first edition of Miguel de Cervantes' Don Quijote de la Mancha, on 4 March 2005, the Mexican city of Guanajuato (central Mexico) was officially conferred the title as "Cervantine Capital of the Americas" by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).Guanajuato was first granted city status by King Phillip V, in 1741. Holds a high-end academic tradition that dates back to 1732 with the establishment of the College of the Immaculate Conception. For the past 50 consecutive years it has been host to the "Entremeses Cervantinos" (Cervantine Appetizers), a kind of short comic plays based on Miguel de Cervantes' work. Since 1972 it has also hosted the internationally renowned Festival Cervantino, one of the world's leading and most important artistic and cultural events. Furthermore, Guanajuato has a museum dedicated exclusively to the Quijote; since 1979 the city has coordinated the International Seminar on Cervantes' work (the only one of its kind in America); its University supports a specialized Center for Cervantine Studies; and the city has a large number of streets, city squares, theatres and corners named after Miguel de Cervantes and its work.
