b. 17 BCE; d. 19 CE. Original name not known; latinized name Arminius; in modern Germany often referenced as Hermann. A chief of the Germanic tribe of the Cherusci; won battle of Teutoburg Forest in 9 CE against three Roman legions (XVII, XVIII, and XIX) under Publius Quinctilius Varus.
