Taylor, Major Cyclists Racing Cycling
Marshall Walter "Major" Taylor (1878-1932) In 1899, Major Taylor became only the second African-American to be named a World Champion when he won the world 1-mile cycling championship in Montreal, defeating Boston rival Tom Butler. Taylor is the second black world champion athlete, after bantamweight boxer George Dixon's title fights in 1890-91.
