Formed in 1942, VfL Wolfsburg played in regional leagues until 1992 when it won promotion to the 2. Bundesliga. It reached the first division with a second place finish in 1997. Its ascent continued with a sixth place finish in the Bundesliga in 1999 and a place in the UEFA Cup.
